bksj.lg.jpg (54817 bytes)On Sunday, January 3, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God left the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia Church and arrived at the Church of Our Lady "The Inexhaustible Chalice" in Brooklyn, NY. The icon was greeted by rector Priest Vadim Arefiev and a multitude of the faithful from throughout Brooklyn. The church was so full, that it was virtually impossible for the priests to cense the church, and many stood outside around the whole church. Diocesan Secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov led the moleben before the wonder-working icon, co-served by the rector, Archpriest George Kallaur, and local clergy of the Georgian Orthodox Church. After the moleben, a lesser blessing of the water was performed, along with an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos. The divine services were adorned with antiphonal singing by the parish choir, singing in Church Slavonic, and a Georgian male choir, singing in their native Georgian. After the moleben, Fr. Serge was given a tour of the Mercy House of St. John of Kronstadt during which, he was able to get to know the residents and workers, and greet them with the upcoming feast.

The following day, the Kursk Icon visited the Church of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy" on Staten Island, where it was greeted by rector Archpriest George Kallaur. From Staten Island the icon then returned to the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign for Nativity services, which were led by the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Hilarion.
