New York: Documents were exchanged between the State Archive of the
Russian Federation and Archive of Holy Trinity Seminary
On
Friday, December 10, microfilm copies of several documents were
exchanged between the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF)
and Archive of Holy Trinity Seminary in the General Consulate of the
Russian Federation in New York City. As a result of a joint effort
directed at preservation of archive documents by GARF and the
Russian Church Abroad, rare documents became accessible for
researchers both from Russia and abroad. One cannot overlook the
symbolic significance of this event, as the first exchange between
the Seminary and GARF took place in September of 2010 in Moscow as
part of the State Archive 90th anniversary celebration, while the
recent exchange occurred during the 90th anniversary of the Russian
Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, which is currently being
celebrated in the ROCOR Synod in New York City.
During the latest exchange, Holy Trinity Seminary transferred to
GARF microfilmed copies of documents from the collection of
Vladislav A. Maevsky (1893-1975), a renowned Church historian,
writer and public figure of the Russian emigration, as well as
microfilmed copies of materials from the personal archive of Priest
Stephen Lyashchevsky (1899-1986), which includes works in Biblical
archeology and in history of the Russian Church Abroad not yet
familiar to the general public. GARF handed over microfilms of
records of Archpriest Georgy Shavelsky (1871-1951), a Russian
military chaplain, and of Saint John of Kronstadt, to Holy Trinity
Seminary.
During the assembly held in the consulate on the occasion of the
archival exchange, attendees were addressed by several speakers,
among whom were the Consul General of the Russian Federation Andrey
K. Yushmanov; His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern America
and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad; His
Eminence Alexander, Metropolitan of Astana and Kazakhstan, who is
currently visiting the USA in connection with the 90th anniversary
celebration of ROCOR; Dean of Holy Trinity Seminary Archpriest
Vladimir Tsurikov; head of the Russian Archive Agency A.N. Artizov;
and director of the State Archive of the Russian Federation S.V.
Mironenko. As a token of his gratitude for assisting in the
organization of the exchange, the Dean of Holy Trinity Seminary
presented the Consul General of the Russian Federation with a copy
of a unique document from the year 1863, an invitation to the
Russian Imperial Navy to visit the city of Baltimore, which attests
to the rich history of diplomatic relations between Russia and the
United States.
On
the following morning, representatives of the Russian archival
services, together with Holy Trinity Seminary Archive Director
Archpriest Vladimir Tsurikov, visited the Synod of the Russian
Church Abroad, where they were received by Metropolitan Hilarion.
The First Hierarch expressed interest in the exchange and readiness
to support the development of future relations with Russian archive
services. He remarked that those relations would doubtlessly enrich
Russians who reside abroad, as well as citizens of the Russian
Federation, helping to preserve Russian cultural heritage and
strengthen connections of the Russian Diaspora with the homeland. On
that same day, the guests departed for Jordanville to visit Holy
Trinity Monastery and the Seminary.
GARF and Holy Trinity Seminary have enjoyed a productive partnership
for some time. Their cooperation resulted in a 2006 joint exhibition
dedicated to Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky), as well as a 2007
exhibition in Pavlovsk devoted to Princess Vera Konstantinovna.
Similar events are also planned for the future.
Holy Trinity Seminary expresses its cordial gratitude to the General
Consulate of the Russian Federation for its hospitality and a
flawless organization of the exchange ceremony.
