Framingham, MA
: Bishop George celebrated the Divine Liturgy and performed the Rite of Holy Unction in St. John's Church

On Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd of April, the Sunday of St. John Climacus, His Grace George, Bishop of Mayfield, vicar of the Eastern American Diocese, paid an archpastoral visit to St. John the Wonderworker Church in Framingham, MA. On Sunday morning, His Grace celebrated the Divine Liturgy, co-served by rector Priest Vadim Pismenny, Protodeacon Alexander Jarostchuk (cleric of Holy Epiphany Church in Boston, MA), and Hierodeacon Anatoly (Zilin; cleric of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville). Many parishioners and parish guests were present at the Liturgy.

In his sermon, His Grace called upon all present – laymen, clergy, and monastics – to read "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" by St. John Climacus, as an important patristic labor that can provide much spiritual aid.

After the service, the rector, greeting Bishop George, noted that the latter is the first bishop to celebrate the Liturgy in St. John’s Church. Fr. Vadim also congratulated His Grace on his recent 60th birthday, as well as with his receiving the Order of St. Seraphim of Sarov, 2nd Class, bestowed upon him at the Sobor of Bishops in Moscow.

In turn, Bishop George thanked parishioners for their prayers and warm reception and called upon them to continue donating generously to the construction of a new church.

After the Liturgy, His Grace conversed with parishioners and the clerics over the course of a Lenten luncheon prepared by the parish sisterhood.

After a break, the Rite of Holy Unction was served at 4:00 PM. Despite the long hierarchal Liturgy that preceded it, many of the faithful, parishioners and guests, remained for the service. Deacon Alexander Doohovskoy (cleric of St. Xenia’s Church in Methuen, MA) joined the above-mentioned clerics.

In his sermon, Bishop George highlighted the penitential nature of this sacrament, and himself asked forgiveness of those present. After the completion of the rite and spending some time with the faithful, His Grace departed for home, to Holy Cross Monastery.
