Middlebrook, VA: The Kursk Root Icon visited All Saints of North America Church

On Tuesday, February 8, the diocesan delegation traveling with the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God left New Jersey for the South, in order to visit the multitudinous parishes, spread across the southern half of our diocese. Amidst tobacco plantations, in a region where virtually every road bears an historical marker commemorating the far-off events of the American Civil War, where towns are adorned with century-old meeting houses of the Protestant denominations traditionally dominant in this area, topped with tall steeples, Orthodoxy is proclaimed and prayers are offered up. Truly, as the Psalmist writes, "Their voice hath gone out through all the earth."

That evening, the Icon arrived at All Saints of North America Church in the town of Middlebrook, VA where Eastern American Diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov led the All-Night Vigil. Fr. Serge was co-served by parish rector, Archpriest John Moses (member of the Diocesan Council and Southern Liaison), Priest Michael Furry (rector of St. Innocent of Alaska Mission in Roanoke, VA – Bulgarian Orthodox Church), and Priest Gabriel Weller (parish cleric). Upon completion of the Vigil, a bountiful dinner was offered in the home of the rector, including some of the best dishes South cuisine has to offer.

The following morning, Fr. Serge celebrated the Divine Liturgy, co-served by the above-mentioned clergy. Many believers gathered in the church, desiring to venerate the holy icon. Upon completion of the Liturgy, Fr. Serge told the gathered faithful about the history and miracles of the Kursk Icon, and then presented the rector with an icon of the Mother of God of the Sign, a blessing from the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion. A lenten luncheon was then offered in the parish hall, during which Fr. Serge shared some of his impressions of the Icon’s travels across the Eastern American Diocese.
