Novo-Diveevo, NY: The Eastern American Diocesan Youth Choir visited Holy Dormition Convent to sing at the divine services

On May 29th, the Sunday of the Blind Man, members of the Eastern American Diocesan Youth Choir travelled to Novo-Diveevo, to the Holy Dormition Convent in Nanuet, NY, in order to sing at the divine services. The choir is comprised of young people from all over the diocese, and has sung at several parishes since its inception just a few years ago. This event marked the choir’s first gathering at Novo-Diveevo.

The youth arrived early Saturday afternoon and were given a tour of the convent by monastery cleric Archpriest Alexander Fedorowski. Fr. Alexander explained the history of the convent, including the role of Archbishop Andrei of Rockland in the founding of the convent, and showed the youth the Dormition Chapel, St. Seraphim of Sarov Church, and the historic cemetery. Of particular attention were the miraculous Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, given to Archbishop Andrei by the monks of Optina Pustyn, and the icon-portrait of St. Seraphim of Sarov, written during St. Seraphim’s lifetime.

Prior to Vigil, a rehearsal was held, followed by a dinner in the convent’s dining hall, prepared by the staff of the Orthodox Adult Home, located on the grounds of the convent.

The choir sang the All-Night Vigil under the direction of Alexander Cooley and Anisia Temidis. The following morning, the youth choir sang at the Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Fr. Alexander, who was co-served by Protodeacon Sergei Arlievsky. Upon completion of the Liturgy, Fr. Alexander thanked the choir for their participation and encouraged them to continue their work, reminding everyone of the importance of the cultivation of our youth as the future of the Church.

After the Liturgy, the choir bade farewell to the convent, and before heading home gathered for a barbeque, during which all had an opportunity to socialize. The next services sung by the youth choir will be at St. Xenia’s Church in Methuen, MA, and Holy Epiphany Church in Boston, MA, on the weekend of June 18-19.
