Wayne, WV: Radonitsa at Holy Cross Monastery

On Tuesday, April 24, the monastic community at Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV marked the "Feast of Rejoicing," or Radonitsa, on the second Tuesday after Holy Pascha. Traditionally, departed Christians are not commemorated until this day, the ninth day after Christ’s Resurrection.

Led by monastery dean Hieromonk Alexander (Frizzell), the monastic brotherhood served memorial services at the cemetery, commemorating those buried on monastery grounds and all Orthodox Christians. Fr. Alexander was co-served by the hermitage’s clergy: Hieromonks Andrew (O’Leary) and Nektarios (Merry), and Hierodeacon Sergius (Wilson). Members of the local Orthodox community were in attendance, as well. After the memorial services, the traditional kutia was blessed and distributed in remembrance of the departed.
