Brooklyn, NY: "Verbochki" Children’s Theater to hold a new premier

The Children’s Theater Group "Verbochki" ("Little Willows"), was first organized under the direction of Matushka Maria Ivanov in early 2010, when the children put on a play entitled "Buratino" at the Christmas Yolka in Holy New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia Church in Brooklyn, NY. The primary aim and desire of the theater group’s participants is to give the children experience with performance art in an atmosphere of friendship and love, giving them as many precious stones as possible, which might serve as indispensible and salvific currency in the life to come, as well as sowing in our children a love for the Russian language, for Russian culture as something not somehow alien, tangential, or even just a curiosity, but as something near and dear, something inborn, something natural.

The second play to be prepared and put on by the "Verbochki" group was the musical "Mama," based on the primary motifs of the story "The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids." This musical was shown not only to parishioners of Holy New Martyrs & Confessors Church, but also to parishioners of Holy Virgin Protection Church in Glen Cove, NY and St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Lakewood, NJ. In June 2011, the theater group presented the musical at a Russian cultural festival being held for several years in New York City.

At the present time, "Verbochki" is ready to delight audiences with a long-awaited musical presentation of the folk story "Finist the Bright Falcon." The premier will be held on June 10 at Holy Virgin Protection Church in Glen Cove, after which the children will joyfully accept invitations to parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church and various organizations.
