East Setauket, NY: Archpastoral visit of Bishop George to Holy Cross Monastery

The Eastern American Diocese has been blessed with several men’s and women’s monasteries, two of which are named in honor of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross – one located in Wayne, WV and one in East Setauket, NY. On Tuesday the 3rd and Wednesday the 4th of December, the abbot of West Virginia’s Holy Cross Monastery and Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop George of Mayfield performed an Archpastoral visit to East Setauket, NY. His Grace was received by the abbot, Archimandrite Maximos (Weimar), together with the eight brethren that reside at Holy Cross Monastery.

During the first day of his visit, His Grace visited the neighboring Greek Convent of All Saints in Calverton, NY, accompanied by Fr. Maximos. The sisters of the convent warmly greeted Bishop George and gave him a tour of the monastery church and grounds. On the way back to Holy Cross Monastery, His Grace made a short visit to the Cradle of Aviation Airplane Museum in Garden City, NY.

On Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, Bishop George led the services for the great feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple, co-served by Fr. Maximos and monastery clergy. Upon completion of the Liturgy, His Grace gave a sermon on the feast and then greeted the monastic brethren. In return, Fr. Maximos thanked Vladyka for his first visit to the monastery and expressed the brotherhood’s desire to host him again in the future.
