Columbia, SC: St. Elizabeth’s Church held a fundraiser barbeque

On Saturday, June 15, St. Elizabeth the New-Martyr Church in Columbia, SC held its annual fundraiser barbeque to benefit the parish’s building fund. Parishioners, friends, and neighbors came from all across the Columbia metropolitan area to partake of "barbeque" ‒ South Carolina-style, slow-smoked pulled pork in a sweet, mustard-based sauce ‒ baked beans, and coleslaw.

Parish rector Archpriest Mark Mancuso was optimistic about this year’s turnout. "Every year, we see new people who will sit and relax with us under the tent and chat. Usually, they ask us about Orthodoxy and most of the time, we end up giving tours of the church, which prompts even more questions. It’s really our ‘Southern Hospitality’ approach to evangelism."

In addition to paying off the mortgage on their new church building, St. Elizabeth’s is also hoping to crown the building with a cupola in the near future. "Very soon we hope to install an onion dome atop our church. We believe this will strengthen our evangelical witness to those around us and will be an additional invitation to our small – but growing – Russian community in the Columbia area."
