Leesburg, VA: Registration Open
for September Course on Orthodox Iconography

On September 16-20, 2014, Trinity House Café in Leesburg, VA will be hosting a five-day course on Orthodox iconography in the traditional egg tempera style. The course will be led by iconography specialist Colette M. Kalvesmaki. The course is designed for all proficiency levels, stating with beginner.

The exemplar icon to be used will be that of Venerable Euphrosynus of Alexandria, patron saint of cooks, after the version written by renowned sixteenth-century iconographer Theophanes the Cretan, whose frescoes are located at a monastery in Meteora, Greece. The cost of the course is $550 (inc. a non-refundable $50 registration fee, which will cover a prepared icon board and oil gilding).

Lessons will be held from Tuesday the 16th through Friday the 19th of September from 10AM to 4PM, and on Saturday, September 20th, from 10AM until work on the icon is complete. Prior to the start of lessons on September 16, Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen) will deliver a lecture on prayer.

Required materials to bring include: a pencil, eraser, rinse jar, palette, ruler, scissors, water-color brushes, and drafting compass (if you have one). The following brushes will be needed: a water color brush, very fluffy, at least ½" wide; stipple brush or a beat-up brush for mixing; small brushes for detail: script #1; and larger brushes for blending: rounds #2, #3, or #4.
