Paris: New Deacon Ordained for ROCOR Mission in Haiti

Wonderful news for those whose hearts are touched by our brothers’ plight in Haiti: on Wednesday, February 12, in the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Korsun in Paris, Bishop Nestor of Korsun ordained Haitian seminarian Augustin Gesnel, who is studying at the Russian Orthodox Seminary in France, to the deaconate. Until he graduates, the newly-ordained Deacon Augustin will serve as a deacon as part of the seminary clergy, and after returning to Haiti, will serve at his home parish of Blessed Augustine in Jacmel.

Although the seminary pays for the Haitian seminarians’ studies, their families are supported through the Fund for Assistance’s HOFR (Haiti Orthodox Family Relief) Program. Had it not been for this support, Deacon Augustin would not have been able to study in France, and the mission would not have had a chance to add to its number of clergy. In 2014-2015, there will be five seminarians from ROCOR’s Mission in Haiti studying at the Russian Orthodox Seminary.
