Monk John (Campbell) Reposed in the Lord

Monk John (Campbell; known previously as Fr. Lawrence of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY) reposed peacefully in the Lord just before midnight on Monday, November 3. He was 81. He spent much of his life preparing English-language texts of the divine services and private prayers, most notably the Fourth Edition of the Jordanville Prayer Book and the Unabbreviated Horologion.

Born on November 14, 1932, Fr. John was an English teacher in San Francisco in the 1960s, and became friends with Gleb Podmoshensky (later Fr. Herman) and Seraphim Rose (later Hieromonk Seraphim) in their little bookstore a few doors down from Joy of All Who Sorrow Cathedral on Geary Boulevard. He became Orthodox and had come to Jordanville during the summer months the year that St. John of San Francisco reposed. When Archbishop Averky (Taushev), Archbishop Leonty (Filippovich) of Chile, and Archimandrite (later Metropolitan) Laurus decided to travel by car for the funeral along with Fr. Victor Lochmatow in June 1966, Lawrence asked if he could come along. He soon after became a novice at St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, CA.

He became a rassophore monk at Holy Trinity Monastery in 1979, and on March 31, 2012 was tonsured into the small schema and received the name of St. John of Shanghai & San Francisco.

Memory eternal to Monk John!
