Wayne, WV: At Holy Cross Monastery, Bishop George leads First Week
of Great Lent
The
divine services on the First Week of Great Lent were led by His
Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop George of Mayfield.
The morning cycle of services, combined with the monastic readings
from the works of the Holy Fathers, lasted almost eight hours each
day. Every evening, His Grace read the Great Canon of St. Andrew of
Crete during Compline, and the Hierarchal Rite of the Presanctified
Liturgy was served on Wednesday and Friday. Upon completion of the
Liturgy on Friday, the appointed canon to the Great-Martyr Theodore
Tyro was read, and the koliva blessed in honor of the saint’s
memory.
On Sunday, March 1, the feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the
All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy were served by Bishop George,
co-served by monastery clergy: deputy abbot Abbot Seraphim (Voepel),
dean Hieromonk Alexander (Frizzell), Hieromonks Andrew (O'Leary),
Hilarion (Heagy), and Gabriel (Hooten), Hierodeacon Sergius
(Wilson), and Deacon Jeremiah Davis. After Liturgy, the Rite of
Orthodoxy was served.
