New York City: On Feast of Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, Bishop Nicholas celebrates Liturgy in Synodal Cathedral

On Sunday, August 28, the great feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, vicar of the Eastern American Diocese, celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City.

His Grace was co-served by cathedral clergy: senior priest Archpriest Andrei Sommer, Hieromonk Eutychius (Dovganyuk), and Protodeacons Nicolas Mokhoff and Vadim Gan. The Synodal choir sang prayerfully under the direction of Peter Fekula.

Upon completion of the Liturgy, Bishop Nicholas addressed the faithful with a sermon on the subject of the feast, noting how, in Jerusalem, the Most Blessed Patriarch leads a procession with the shroud three days before the feast itself. His Grace called on everyone – women, men, parents, children – to follow the example of the pure life lived by the Most Holy Theotokos.

A litiya was then served for Metropolitan Laurus (Skurla; +2008) and Archimandrite Flor (Vanko) on the occasion of their saints’ day, and for Archimandrite Sergei (Romberg) and Princess Elena N. Wolkonsky on the occasion of the anniversaries of their repose. After the service, a festal luncheon and memorial repast were provided for the clergy and faithful in the cathedral hall, organized by Princess Wolkonsky’s daughter.
