Youri A. Petcherkin

Youri A. Petcherkin is the head Choirmaster/Psalmoschik at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Washington, D.C., an appointment he has held since 2000. Prior to that, he led the choir in Cleveland’s Cathedral of St. Sergius for eight years, where he also taught music and Church Slavonic at the parish school from 1992 - 1999. Before immigrating to the United States, Mr. Petcherkin worked in Minsk, Belarus from 1989 - 1991, leading daily services as the Choirmaster/Psalomschik of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and directing the Faculty Choir of the M.I. Glinka School of Music, where he also taught courses in choral discipline and vocal technique. In Moscow, while earning his dual degree in choir directing and choral arts teaching (completed in 1989  at the renowned Gnesin Russian Academy of Music), he served as director of the male choir of the Tushin Region House of Officers (1986-1988). Prior to entering the Gnesin Academy in 1981, he had earned degrees at the Cheliabinsk Music School as a bajan instructor and folk orchestra director.  Mr. Petcherkin’s work with the Washington D.C. choir has earned it the reputation of being among the finest choirs in all of ROCOR.
