White Haven, NY: The Port Arthur Icon of the Mother of God visited Holy Protection Greek Convent

wh.lg.jpg (56675 bytes)The Port Arthur Icon of the Triumph of the Theotokos visited Holy Protection Greek Orthodox Convent in White Haven, PA, on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of August. The icon was greeted with a procession by monastery clergy and monastics during the Great Vespers on Saturday evening. After the Vespers, a Great Paraklesis to the Theotokos and Small Compline with akathist to the Theotokos were served.

Over 100 of faithful were present for the evening services to venerate of the Port Arthur Icon. After the evening services, Subdeacon Nathaniel Sorochka, who is traveling with the icon with the blessing of Bishop George of Mayfield, explained the history of the icon. Upon veneration, Priest Mark Andrews, the Chaplain of the Convent, distributed copies of the Port Arthur Icon to the faithful.

On Sunday morning, Matins were served at 6:30, followed by the reading of the Hours and Divine Liturgy. During the Divine Liturgy, the choir of the sisters sang beautifully and the church was filled to capacity with Orthodox faithful who traveled from near and far to attend the services and offer their prayers to the Mother of God.

After Divine Liturgy, Fr. Mark gave a sermon on the history of the Port Arthur Icon. After the sermon, the faithful venerated the wonder-working icon and received a copy of the icon from the Abbess of the Convent, Gerontissa Olympiada.
