"Lords of Glory"
A screenplay by a priest of the Eastern American Diocese makes it to the voting stage of a film competition

"Lords of Glory" is an Orthodox screenplay written by an American convert to Orthodoxy, Fr. Maximos McIntyre, who is also a cleric of the Eastern American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. This screenplay has successfully made it to the voting stage of a screenplay and film competition on moviehatch.com. Diocesan Media Office correspondent Rdr. Peter Lukianov spoke to Fr. Maximos about this exciting endeavor.

log.lg.jpg (30900 bytes)Please tell us Father, why did you write this screenplay?

I wrote this after my surprise that few in the West really seemed to know of the persecution and millions of lives lost to the cruelty of godless atheism, greed, foreign policy and inhumane barbarism that permeated the 20th century. Although the screenplay reflects the perspective of a Russian Orthodox priest and his adversary in the communist era, I was influenced from the testimony of the travesty of the persecution of Greeks under Turkish yoke, the Armenian genocide, the Serbian holocaust, Russian, Chinese and Romanian new martyr’s and those who struggled in Bulgaria in compiling this work.

I did not necessarily want to focus on just morality, history or to tell a mere story. I wanted the story to reflect true spiritual struggle tested under the cruelest of circumstances, true repentance and selfless love laced with patristic teaching in opposition to the worldly.

I truly feel there is a battle which resonates in each and every human being and this is what I tried to emphasize within this fictional work. We either become servants of the Almighty God or serve the world, the flesh and the evil one. We must freely choose.

How did your screenplay make it to this stage of the competition?

After writing the screenplay and consulting with a respected insider in the film industry I traveled to the Los Angeles, CA area in late June 2010 to pitch my idea and completed screenplay to various executives and others who worked for a variety of production companies. I was met with some enthusiasm by a few, but mostly outright rejection, very few companies even wanted to read the script. One of the interested companies was MovieHatch who read the screenplay and suggested I participate. They are known in the industry for breaking down barriers between writers and producers. I was quite surprised that with all the participants and the possibility of rejection that it was passed through to the voting stage after being read by various readers. Last year I was told, this competition had over 100,000 voters and this year 25 of the top Hollywood production companies are participating, looking for the next great movie concept based on public reaction.

Where can people go to read more or vote for the screenplay?
