Woodbourne, NY: The Russian Orthodox children’s camp NORR opens

On Sunday, July 3, the summer camp of the Association of Russian Explorers Outside of Russia (NORR) opened for the season. The arrival of the children and leadership for the 45th camp in the Catskill Mountains of New York was accompanied by a summer downpour and lightning.

The camp road became a river of flowing water; everyone had to traverse deep puddles and mud; only the camp tractor was able to navigate the road without sinking into the mud. However, the unusual weather did not dampen the raised spirits and was unable to get the campers down. They were very happy to reconnect with friends and make new ones. This year, NORR had to close registration early, as the camp was filled to capacity.

The opening moleben had to be moved from the chapel to the dining pavilion and was served by Archpriest Alexei Ohotin (who has been providing spiritual guidance to the camp for many years) with Protodeacon Sergei Arlievsky (Archpriest Victor Tseshkovsky and Priest Alexandre Antchoutine were also present). Fr. Alexei greeted the children and instructed them to live peacefully and to help one another.

His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, will visit camp and lead services for the feast day of the Sts. Peter & Paul camp chapel on July 11/12.
