Crestwood, NY: The Diocesan Women’s Choir took part in Orthodox Education Day at St. Vladimir’s Seminary

On Saturday, October 1, the Holy Myrrhbearers Diocesan Women’s Choir, under the direction of Eugenia Temidis, took part for the first time in Orthodox Education Day, whose theme this year was "For God and Country." The choir was officially invited by St. Vladimir’s Theological Seminary (OCA); their participation in the program was blessed by the First Hierarch of ROCOR, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion.

Two choirs sang during the Divine Liturgy on the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God (n.s.) in the seminary’s Thee Hierarchs Chapel, the Myrrhbearers Women’s Choir and the seminary’s male choir, under the direction of Hierodeacon Herman (Мajkrzak). The Myrrhbearers Choir sang in entirely English, including Serbian and Bulgarian hymns and pieces by Kastalsky, Trubachev, and Dinev.

After lunch, the Women’s Choir performed a spiritual music concert in the seminary chapel. Their start was delayed, however, until enough seating could be found for the unexpected number of guests.

Inasmuch as Orthodox Education Day was held with the missionary theme "For God and Country," the Women’s Choir performed a wide variety of pieces not only in Church Slavonic, but also in English, Greek, French, Arabic, and Georgian. The Choir’s goal was to not only allow the audience to experience the joy of the feasts of the Protection, the Nativity of the Lord, and Pascha through these spiritual pieces, but also to acquaint them with the masterpieces of such master composers as P. Chesnokov, A. Kastalsky, A. Arensky, and B. Ledkovsky (former professor at St. Vladimir’s Seminary).

At the present time, the Holy Myrrhbearers Women’s Choir is preparing to sing the All-Night Vigil on the eve of the patronal feast day of Our Lady of Kazan Church in Newark, NJ, on Thursday, November 3.

For more information about the Choir, to join or to invite the Choir to your parish, please write to info@womenschoir.org or call (845) 406-1194.
