Jacmel, Haiti: The Patronal Feast Day of St. Augustine Church

This year, the patronal feast day of St. Augustine Church in Jacmel, Haiti, was celebrated with much joy. Jean Chénier-Dumais and Gregoire Legouté, who nourish the Haiti Mission, arrived on Wednesday, June 27, the eve of the feast. That afternoon, they baptized seven young catechumens, aged between five and twelve years, at Jacmel’s oceanfront. The baptisms were followed by Vespers and Matins.

The following morning, on the very day of the feast, the activities began early with the baptism of 13 children. Frs. Jean and Gregoire then con-celebrated the festal Divine Liturgy in the recently constructed temporary church shelter for the first time. The church was constructed thanks to the loving support of the Fund for Assistance to ROCOR and its donors. After the Gospel reading of the day, Fr. Jean gave a homily in which he talked about the life and struggles of St. Augustine for the preservation of the Orthodox faith.

A dinner was given later by the parishioners with the support of the Mission and the parish. Words of thanks for the love and hospitality shown by the parish were spoken by Fr. Gregoire.
