Mahopac, NY: An Appeal from the New Kursk Root Hermitage

Dear friends!

Hurricane Sandy caused incredible damage and suffering along its path. We are thankful to God that no trees fell on Nativity of the Mother of God Church or the houses and buildings of the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY. However, a number of big trees fell on the cemetery, breaking granite crosses and monuments, and on the road down to the small chapel and the pond. Currently, there are no caretakers assigned to the cemetery, so our parish tries to manage the upkeep of the cemetery with our own insufficient manpower. The parish does not have enough strong men to deal with the fallen trees without outside help. We also do not have any money to hire people to do the work. So far, we have managed to start the cleanup on our own with the children.

If anyone would be willing to come and spend even a few hours on the cleanup, it would be a great help. Please beware of hanging branches, especially if it is a windy day, and do bring gloves, saws (especially chainsaws), axes, ropes, etc. Branches and pieces of trees can be conveniently thrown down the hill near the cemetery. You are welcome to come whenever it is convenient for you, or please let us know if you would like to make arrangements and work together.

Thank you all for your prayers for our New Kursk Root Hermitage! God bless you!
