Wayne, WV: Holy Cross Monastery will be holding a Matching Fund Drive for Project Kellia

From June 1 through September 29, Holy Cross Monastery will be holding a matching fund drive for Project Kellia, the goal of which is to complete the construction of a monastic dormitory, necessary for the monastery’s continued growth. An anonymous donor has pledged $75,000 in matching funds for Project Kellia.

Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV is the fastest growing monastic community in the Eastern American Diocese. Over the past several years, the number of monks has grown substantially. All of the monastic cells and other available living spaces have been occupied. "For now, monks and candidates must still live in guest house rooms, old RVs and unfinished basements and garages," said monastery dean Hieromonk Alexander (Frizzell).

Project Kellia will provide a monastic dormitory consisting of nine cells, an infirmary, and a medical dispensary. In the words of Fr. Alexander, they expect that the cells will be filled immediately. "Eager young candidates are arriving this summer with hopes of beginning their monastic life at the hermitage, and the completion of these new monastic cells is integral to their ability to live here permanently."

The project has been ongoing since the fall of 2012, and so far $300,000 has been raised toward the anticipated goal of $500,000. Even the smallest donation helps assure the completion of Project Kellia. "We actually hope to raise much more than is necessary for the building, so that we can upgrade the monastery’s wastewater systems to accommodate the growth of the monastery," explains Fr. Alexander. "Any additional funds will go right into these infrastructure projects."
