Puerto Rico: San Juan Climacos Mission will hold an Icon Exhibit
San
Juan Climacos Mission San German, Puerto Rico, is intending to hold
a series of events in 2013, intended to showcase Holy Orthodoxy. The
principal event will be the visit to the Mission by the First
Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence, Metropolitan
Hilarion. Following this, the Mission will hold an icon exhibit and
lecture series about Orthodox iconography.
The main goal of these events is to unite the local Orthodox
communities.
The exhibit will be run by the Mission’s rector, Priest Gregorio
Justiniano, and will primarily future the work of his son, Hieromonk
Silouan – iconographer and clergy of Holy Cross Brotherhood in East
Setauket, NY.
San Juan Climacos Mission works mostly with converts from among the
local population. Fr. Gregorio noted that the organizers hope the
exhibit will be a success, serving to familiar the locals more
officially with Orthodoxy. "There seems to be quite a few of
inquirers of Orthodoxy, but they haven’t been fully exposed yet. The
people here need to realize that we are not just another mission or
another isolated religious group, amongst many in Puerto Rico. We
are connected with the Mother Church and, without Her, we will not
be able to be nurtured."
