"Sacred Images:" Icons from Holy Trinity Monastery to go on Exhibit at Herkimer County Community College

Over 50 Russian Orthodox icons and religious objects from the collection of the Foundation of Russian History and Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY will be on display at Herkimer County Community College’s Cogar Gallery. The exhibition "Sacred Images: Icons from Holy Trinity Monastery," running from August 12 to September 23, introduces viewers to the art and history of icon painting, the symbolism of icons and their role in Orthodox worship, and various styles and methods of producing icons. It also explores the work of iconographers at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY where traditional icon painting has been practiced for decades.

The exhibition features icons in a variety of media and techniques: painted with egg tempera, cast in metal, carved from wood and mother-of-pearl, painted on enamel, engraved on silver, embroidered, and printed. The icons are supplemented with religious objects – vestments, chalices, liturgical Gospels, and blessing crosses.

A closing reception will be held on Friday, September 23, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The reception is free and open to the public.
