On Saturday, February 20, on the day of St. Theodore Tyro, the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign. His Eminence was co-served by His Grace Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan.

On Tuesday, February 23, renowned author of spiritual literature and member of the Union of Russian Writers, Archpriest Artemy Vladimirov, arrived in New York on an evening flight from Moscow. With the blessing of His Holiness, Patriarch Kyrill, and His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, Fr. Artemy will be visiting the Eastern American Diocese until March 9, 2010.

On Sunday, February 21, on the feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathdral in New York. The First Hierarch was co-served by His Grace Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan, and the synodal clergy. 

 

The First Week of Great Lent at Holy Cross Monastery

On the first week of Great Lent, the full cycle of services was served at Holy Cross Monastery. The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts was served on Wednesday and Friday, celebrated by the abbot, His Grace, Bishop George, co-served by the monastery clergy.  On Friday evening, His Grace tonsured novice Alexander to the rasaphor under the name John.

This year, the seminarians were honored by the presence of Archbishop Anthony of Borispol and Bishop George of Mayfield.

North Ft. Myers, FL: VIM Volunteers completed a work week at St. Nicholas Monastery

On Sunday, January 24, volunteers from the Volunteers in Mission (VIM) program, headed up by Priest John Moses and other members of the Diocese Council, arrived for a work week at St. Nicholas Monastery in North Ft. Myers, FL. The monastery was in dire need of repairs ranging from electrical work to painting and housekeeping.

On Monday, February 8, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign," the Protectress of the Russian Diaspora, completed its travels through the Eastern American Diocese. Flying into New York from Atlanta, diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov and those accompanying him made haste to the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign, where the icon was greeted by the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad.

The parish is the first church in the world to be take St. John as its heavenly intercessor. On Saturday, February 6, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited the Church of Our Lady, Joy of all who Sorrow, in Atlanta, GA. The wonder-working icon was greeted in procession by the parishioners and rector, Archpriest Alexis Duncan. The Liturgy for the Departed then began, celebrated by the rector.

On Friday, February 5, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited Holy Annunciation Greek Cathedral, the seat of Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta (Ecumenical Patriarchate), in Atlanta, capital of Georgia. Under the pealing of bells, the clergy and parishioners of the cathedral greeted the icon, and the Small Compline with akathist began.

On Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of February, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited churches in northeastern Florida. On the road to Jacksonville, the icon’s retinue stopped in St. Augustine, the oldest continually inhabited city in the United States (founded 1565).

The icon was greeted by His Grace, Bishop Victor (formerly of Podolsk – retired) and a multitude of the faithful. After the greeting of the icon, His Grace led a moleben with akathist.

On Wednesday, February 3, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God returned to the east coast of Florida to visit the newly established Mission of St. Andrew the First-Called in the town of Daytona Beach. The faithful, led by their rector, Archpriest Andrey Pastukh, joyously greeted the Heavenly Queen with flowers in front of the church.

On Wednesday, February 4, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited St. Sava Serbian Church in St. Petersburg, FL. The rector, Archpriest Stefan Zaremba, and parishioners greeted the icon in front of the church to the peal of bells and then the moleben with akathist began.

On Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st of January, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited the Church of St. Prince Vladimir, Equal-of-the-Apostles, in Miami, FL. The wonder-working icon arrived in the city on an evening flight from snowy Nashville, accompanied by diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov.
