sovet.lg.jpg (101377 bytes)On Tuesday, September 14, a regular meeting of the Diocesan Council of the Eastern American Diocese was held in Howell, NJ, presided over by His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York. Also present at the meeting were the diocesan vicars, Their Graces, Bishops George of Mayfield and Jerome of Manhattan, as well as diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov, Archpriest Victor Potapov, Archpriest John Moses, Priest Nikolai Manduke, Subdeacon George Schatiloff, G.N. Nikolsky, and S.R. Lopoukhine.

Council members heard the following reports and adopted the following resolutions:

1) A report by the chairman of the Health Insurance and Pension Investigative Commission. The Council requested that the diocesan secretary assign an individual to prepare a census of all parishes/religious institutions in the USA with membership data and contact information. The Council expressed sincere gratitude to Mr. George Temidis and commission members.

2) A report by the diocesan secretary on the successful Lenten Retreat and Pastoral Conference that was held in St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Mayfield on March 1-3, 2010. The conference was attended by 102 clergymen. Archpriest Artemy Vladimirov (Rector of All Saints Church in Krasnoye Selo, Moscow) and Deacon Andrei Psarev were the main speakers. By invitation of Abbot Sergius (Bowyer), a pilgrimage was organized to St. Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery in South Canaan, PA. The Council expressed sincere gratitude to the parishioners of St. John the Baptist Cathedral for their hospitality.

3) A report by Archpriest John Moses on the successful completion of two Volunteers in Mission (VIM) projects throughout the diocese. Future project will be announced on the diocesan website.

4) A written report from diocesan treasurer Priest Jonah Campbell on the financial situation of the diocese. Glory be to God, many parishes have started making their regular contributions to the diocese. The Council is concerned because there are still many parishes that are not paying their dues and this jeopardizes the work of the diocese and the Synod of Bishops. Metropolitan Hilarion approved a plan that will authorize the Diocesan Auditing Committee to audit those parishes who are not contributing to the diocese.

5) A report by the Diocesan Secretary on the creation of an electronic clergy database. In March, Metropolitan Hilarion requested that each clergyman fill out a statistic form in order to update all diocesan records. Met. Hilarion expressed his gratitude to all those clergymen who have submitted their statistics forms. A list of clergymen who have not submitted statistics forms was presented to the Metropolitan and Council members.

6) A report by Rdr. Peter Lukianov, Rdr. Gregory Levitsky and M.M. Kazmierczak on the current state of the Diocesan Media Office. Council members were presented with written reports on the progress of the diocesan website and other projects within the diocese. The Council expressed sincere gratitude to the members of the Media Office.

7) The Council resolved to organize a Great Lenten Retreat at St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Washington, DC on March 23-25, 2010. Further details will be published on the diocesan website.

8) The Council resolved to investigate the possibility of creating a Diocesan Order that can be awarded to clerics and laity.

9) The Council resolved to honor the 25th anniversary of the repose of Met. Philaret on November 21, 2011. Met. Hilarion will lead the divine services in St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral in Paterson, NJ, followed by a photo-montage and presentation on the life of Metropolitan Philaret. Bishop Jerome will lead the divine services in Holy Trinity Monastery, followed by a litiya at the tomb of Met. Philaret.

10) The council resolved to celebrate Metropolitan Hilarion’s namesday in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign on November 2-3, 2010. Click here for more information.

The next session of the Diocesan Council has been scheduled for November 2, 2010 in the Synod of Bishops.
