Metropolitan Hilarion: "Let us continue to pray for those who are
still suffering in the wake of this natural disaster"
On
Saturday the 27th and Sunday the 28th of August, on the great Feast
of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, despite the threat of
the approaching Hurricane Irene, the First Hierarch of the Russian
Church Abroad, His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern
America & New York, led the divine services in the Synodal Cathedral
of the Sign in New York City. His Eminence was co-served by His
Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Jerome of Manhattan
and cathedral clergy.
On Sunday evening, as the hurricane left the shores of the East
Coast, Metropolitan Hilarion issued a statement in which he gave
thanks to the Lord for His great and abundant mercy. His Eminence
also said, "It is no coincidence that our churches suffered
relatively minor damage because of the timing of the hurricane,
which coincided with the Dormition of the Mother of God. I am deeply
grateful to the reverend clergy and faithful of our Diocese for
their fervent prayers during this difficult time. Let us offer
thanksgiving to our All-Merciful Savior and continue to pray for
those who are still suffering in the wake of this natural disaster."
