Buffalo, NY: Metropolitan Hilarion led the divine services in Sts. Theodore Church

Sunday, June 19, was a fitting Father’s Day for Sts. Theodore Church in Williamsville (Buffalo), New York, to welcome their father in Christ, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, to serve on their patronal feast of the Translation of the Relics of St. Theodore Stratelates (June 8/21). It was Metropolitan Hilarion’s first archpastoral visit to Sts. Theodore Church since becoming First Hierarch.

His Eminence was co-served by rector Priest Peter Jackson, Priest Seraphim Wing (cleric of St. Nicholas Church in Edinboro, PA), parish cleric Priest Peter Irfan, Deacon Nicholas Olhovsky (cleric of Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY), who was accompanying the Metropolitan, and Deacon John Malcom (cleric of the Church of the Entrance into the Temple of the Holy Virgin in Syracuse, NY).

During Sixth Hour, Metropolitan Hilarion ordained Reader Andrew Hammond a subdeacon, and during the Divine Liturgy ordained Deacon John Malcom to the priesthood. Fr. John’s matushka, Ekaterina, is the daughter of Archpriest Nikolai Tkatschow (rector of Church of the Entrance into the Temple of the Holy Virgin). Fr. John will be serving as a chaplain at the US Army Reserve in Niagara Falls, NY.

During the Small Entrance, His Eminence awarded Fr. Peter Jackson the right to wear the gold cross. The choir was skillfully directed by the talented Justin Kawa. At the end of Divine Liturgy, the Metropolitan presented Eugene Korbut a gramota for his self-sacrificing labors and service as parish warden. His Eminence also presented the parish with a special gift from Archpriest Valery Lukianov (New Jersey Dean and rector of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Lakewood, NJ): a precious icon of St. Theodore Stratelates painted in the Palekh style.

The Sisterhood of Sts. Martha & Mary, under the direction of their new head sister, Mary Jo Keenan, did an excellent job readying the church for the Metropolitan’s visit and preparing both the clergy dinner after Vigil and the festal banquet after Liturgy.
