haiti.lg.jpg (25804 bytes)According to the official website of the Fund for Assistance to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, the Fund and the Orthodox Mission in Haiti has launched a new program designed to assist needy families among the members of the mission in Haiti.

The Haiti Orthodox Family Relief Program enables individuals, as well as Orthodox parishes from around the world, to provide direct financial support to Haitian Orthodox families and readers through direct cash assistance.

According to an announcement on the Fund for Assistance website, "A commitment of $100 per month for a year will feed, clothe, and provide shelter for a Haitian family. A commitment of $300 per month for a year will provide assistance to Orthodox readers in the mission’s seven parishes across the country. Readers hold parishes together and provide members with spiritual aid and comfort, as well as conduct reader services in the absence of a priest."

The mission’s two priests, Fr. Jean Chenier-Dumais and Fr. Gregoire Legoute, qualify families for participation and monitor the programs’ success.

On January 12, 2010, the Republic of Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake. After the initial 7.0 magnitude quake, a multitude of aftershocks were recorded. According to the official tally as of January 24, 2010, 150,000 people have lost their lives, while more than 200,000 were wounded.

Many countries are sending aid workers, medics, and essential supplies to Haiti. In the USA, collections are being conducted throughout the country to help the survivors of the disaster. On January 14, in response to the tragedy in Haiti, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia released a call to help the suffering, of whom almost 2,000 Orthodox Haitians are parishioners of ROCOR.
