New York, NY: On the Transfiguration, Bishop Jerome led the Divine
Services in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign
On
Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th of August, on the great feast
day of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, His Grace, Eastern American
Diocesan vicar Bishop Jerome of Manhattan, led the divine services
in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York.
During the Divine Liturgy, His Grace was co-served by Synodal
clergy: Archimandrite Ioann (Magramm), the cathedral’s senior priest
Archpriest Andrei Sommer, Hieromonk Nicholas (Perekrestov),
Hieromonk Gabriel (Kvasnikov), Priest Ion Radu, Protodeacon Nicholas
Mokhoff, and Hierodeacon Panteleimon (Jigalin; cleric of the
Australian Diocese).
Upon completion of the Liturgy, His Grace performed the blessing of
the grapes and other fruits. Addressing the faithful with a festal
sermon, His Grace noted:
"The feast of the Transfiguration reminds us in many ways of Pascha:
indeed, Pascha means 'passover,' and the Transfiguration showed the
Divine glory of Jesus Christ to the apostles and is a foretaste of
our passing over that reminds us of our own future transfiguration.
Why could the apostles recognize Moses and Elijah, whom they had
never seen before? Because our earthly life hides much from us, and
can withhold many secrets from us while we are still here, but in
the spiritual realm, all is clear, including the identity of all.
Thus we much strive to fulfill our own potential and become who we
are meant to be, while we have the opportunity to change. Through
the prayers of the Theotokos, O Lightgiver, glory to Thee."
