New York: Archdeacon Eugene Burbelo is Honored at the Synodal
Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign”
On
Sunday, June 26, 2011, the second Sunday of Pentecost and the feast
day of All Russian Saints, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of
Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox
Church Outside of Russia, celebrated Divine Liturgy at the Synodal
Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign” in New York. Joining him were
His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada and His Grace
Bishop Jerome of Manhattanm, along with the Cathedral’s clergymen.
After Liturgy, Vladyka Hilarion announced that Archdeacon Eugene
Burbelo, having served devotedly and piously under the Primates of
the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia over the course of 56
years, had submitted a request to retire. The First Hierarch of the
Russian Church Abroad expressed the profound gratitude of the
hierarchy to Fr Eugene and invoked Divine blessings upon him, and
gave him a parting gift.
At the formal reception that followed, held in a familial
atmosphere, many warm words were spoken and speeches read in honor
of Archdeacon Eugene and his wife, Klavdia Pavlovna.
Archdeacon Eugene Burbelo was ordained to the deaconate on November
20, 1955, by Metropolitan Anastassy (Gribanovsky, +1965) of blessed
memory in order to serve at the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God
and the Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign” in New York. In
November, 2005, during the celebration of his 50 years of service,
Metropolitan Laurus of blessed memory elevated Fr Eugene to the rank
of archdeacon.
