The all-Russian celebration St. Vladimir's Day took place this year on Sunday, July 26, in the Memorial Church to the Millennial of Russian Christianity, in Jackson, NJ. St. Vladimir Church holds a special place not only in our Diocese, but in all of the Russian Diaspora.

Anastasy Yatrelis, rector of Sts. Cyril & Methodius parish in Summerville, SC, and Fr. Mark Mancuso, rector of St Elizabeth’s in Columbia.

On the feast day of the Holy Royal Martyrs, His Grace, Bishop George of Mayfield, led the divine services at the Hermitage of the Holy Cross. His Grace was co-served by the monastery clergy. 

 

Howell, NJ: Diocesan Feast of the Royal Martyrs held in St. George's Church
July 17, 2009
On  Thursday, July 16, at St. George's Church in Howell, NJ, the Diocesan feast of the Holy Royal Martyrs began. At 5:45 PM, to the sound of pealing bells, the faithful greeted the relics of the Holy Royal Martyrs, after which began the All-Night Vigil. During the Polyeleos, the singing of the akathist to the Holy Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II commenced.

 

Washington D.C.: Nuptial Liturgy served in St. John the Baptist Cathedral

During the Divine Liturgy served on July 12, the Feast of the Holy Pre-eminent Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul, and with the blessing of His Eminence, the Very Most Reverend Metropolitan Hilarion, Reader Daniel Gregoire and Elizabeth Atkins, parishioners of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, were joined in Holy Matrimony.

On July 12, the feast day of the Holy Apostles Peter & Paul, the rector, Archpriest Serafim Gan, served the Divine Liturgy, co-served by Priest Paul Akmolin, a cleric of the Mid-American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Protodeacon Paul Wolkow, and Deacons Eugene Kallaur and Victor Ganson, the latter of whom is a cleric of the Church of the Epiphany in Roslindale (Boston), MA.

 

Northville, NY: SGPA’s “Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Faithful”

Saturday, July 11, marked the “Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Faithful” (Russian: DPV) at the summer camp of St. George Pathfinders of America, “Tsarskoe Selo” Chapter. At 5:30 PM, the All-Night Vigil began with the greeting of the relics of the Holy Royal Martyrs and was led by His Grace, Bishop Jerome of Manhattan.

 

Jordanville, NY: HTS participates in meeting of Seminary leadership held at St. Tikhon's Seminary in South Canaan, PA

On Thursday July 9, 2009, St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary hosted a meeting of Seminary leaders in the United States and Canada at the diocesan center of His Grace, Bishop Tikhon. Prior to the meeting, Protodeacon Vladimir Tsurikov met with the abbot of St. Tikhon’s monastery, Fr. Sergius.

 

Jordanville, NY: Summer Youth Program held at holy Trinity Monastery
July 13, 2009
After many years in abeyance, the Jordanville Summer Youth Program was relaunched on June 21, 2009, on the Sunday of All Saints of Russia. The program was open to boys between the ages of fifteen and eighteen, and lasted three weeks.

Jordanville: Dean of Holy Trinity Seminary visits Educational Institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church

On June 1, 2009, Protodeacon Vladimir Tsurikov travelled to Russia, where he met with representatives of different educational institutions and research centers.
The first day of the dean’s visit began with a visit to the Martha and Mary Convent in Moscow, founded by the New martyr Elizaveta Feodorovna. 

 

Howell, NJ: A General Choir of Diocesan Singers will sing the Divine Services during the Feast of the Royal Martyrs

Singers from all around the diocese are invited to join the general choir, which will sing the Divine services during the diocesan feast of the Royal Martyrs on July 16th and 17th. The choir will also participate in the Royal Martyrs montage, which will be presented during the outdoor luncheon on July 17th.

 

Moscow, Russia: Archpriest Victor Potapov is appointed a member of the Authoring Committee for the "Foundations of Orthodox Culture" textbook

By decree of His Holiness, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kyrill, an Authoring Committee and Authoring  Board, tasked with compiling a textbook and teaching materials for a high school academic course, "The Foundations of Orthodox Culture,"  were created on June 29, 2009. 

 

Lakewood, NJ: Parish Feast Day of the Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin

On July 9th (new style), the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the appearance of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. This feast day celebrates the miraculous appearance of the icon on Lake Ladoga; its transfer, from the Second Rome at Constantinople, to the Third Rome, Moscow. This wonderful, miraculous icon protected our homeland from sorrows and strife for hundreds of years, and is the symbol of Holy Russia.

 

Framingham, MA: Parish Feast Day of St. John's Church

In many churches abroad, and now in Russia also, the feast day of the glorification of the great saint of the Russian Diaspora, St. John, Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco, was prayerfully celebrated. The feast took place in our parish of St. John, as well. On this day, our parish celebrated yet another important date: one year ago, the first divine service was held in our church, led by Hieromonk Roman (Krassovsky).

 

Myrrhbearers. A unique choir in the Russian Diaspora.

The Holy Myrrhbearers Women’s Choir, under the direction of Eugenia Temidis, is a rare phenomenon in the Russian diaspora. Women’s choirs usually form in convents; a lay women’s choir has never existed in the Russian emigration. The founder and musical director of this choir is Eugenia Temidis. Since childhood, she listened to the choir led by her grandfather, Georgii Ivanovich Samoilovich, learning Church Slavonic, reading and singing on the kliros in her parish in Nyack, NY, and participated in school choruses.

Virginia: The Washington "Putivl" Summer Camp

On June 27, this year's Summer camp held by “Putivl,” the Washington chapter of the St. George Pathfinders of America, started. As in past years, camp was held outdoors, under the open sky in a picturesque spot in the Virginia hills practically on the West Virginia border. 

 

Glen Cove, NY: Orthodox Women's Conference "Liturgy and Prayer"

On Saturday, June 27, with the blessing of His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, about 60 members of the clergy and laity gathered in prayer for a day of spiritual education, edification, and idea-sharing at a conference for Orthodox women of all ages entitled: “Liturgy and Prayer.”

Interview with Bishop George of Mayfield
On December 7th, 2008, Archimandrite George (Schaefer) was consecrated Bishop of Mayfield and vicar of the Eastern American Diocese. On May 7th, Bishop George was elected abbot of the Hermitage of the Holy Cross in West Virginia, where he currently resides. Not long after the recent meeting of the Diocesan Council, His Grace answered several questions during his first interview as a hierarch.

Northville, NY - The Opening of SGPA Summer Camp, Druzhina “Tsarskoe Selo”
July 1, 2009
On Sunday, June 28, in the hills of upstate New York, the summer camp of St. George Pathfinders of America, “Tsarskoe Selo” Druzhina (chapter), opened. The camp is attended by over 120 boys and girls (8 to 18 years of age), who spend the entire month of July in the woods, sleeping in tents and swimming in nearby Lake Sacandaga.
