New York, NY: The Holy Myrrhbearers Diocesan Women’s Choir held a concert in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign

On Sunday, February 6, after an almost eight-year hiatus, the Holy Myrrhbearers Diocesan Women's Choir under director Eugenia Temidis, returned in sacred concert to the Synodal Cathedral of the Mother of God of the Sign in New York City. This performance, under artistic direction of Princess Elena N.Wolkonsky was the 92nd in a musical series which benefits the restoration of the historical Synod building (Baker Mansion). A new concert program entitled "Pilgrimage of Praise: A Musical Journey through the Liturgical Year" presented to its listeners sacred musical highlights of the entire festal cycle. Garnished with short bilingual narrations, the women’s program musically and spiritually transported the audience through all seasons of the Church year, anguishing over its most sorrowful moments and rejoicing with its greatest triumphs.

The HMWC dedicated this concert to the memory of distinguished émigré hymnographer Valeria K. Hoecke (1904-1986), on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of her repose.

Despite the fact that the entire performance was sung in Church Slavonic, all interested listeners were able to acquire full English-language translations of all liturgical texts, along with extensive background notes on their liturgical meaning, composers and history. In this manner, the Myrrhbearers Choir weaves an educational missionary effort into one of musical artistry.

The singers and director of the HMWC are deeply grateful to our First Hierarch, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, His Grace Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan, and Archpriest Andrei Sommer, for the generous gift of their time and attention, as they attended the performance despite their very busy schedules and important obligations that same day.

At present, the women’s diocesan group is beginning focused efforts to prepare for upcoming Great Lenten concerts at local parishes and, finally, for the weekend of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women, the choir’s own patronal Paschal feast day (May 7-8), during which it accepts guest singers from all over the country and sings both the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy commemorating their heavenly patronesses, at locations yet to be decided.
