Nashville, TN: The Kursk Root Icon visited St. Innocent of Moscow Mission
January 31, 2010
On Friday, January 29, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God left Norfolk and began its trek by car to the west, through the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains to Nashville, the capital of Tennessee. On the road to the Nashville, the icon was greeted by a winter snowstorm, which so thoroughly covered the roads in snow and ice that the trip lasted over 15 hours.

 

Virginia Beach, VA: The Kursk Root Icon visited the parish of St. Joseph of Optina

On Thursday, January 28, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited the parish of St. Joseph of Optina in Virginia Beach, VA. The city sits on the Chesapeake Bay, the biggest bay in the United States. Entering the city from the north, the icon traveled over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which at 23 miles long was considered one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world at the time of construction. 

 

Elizabeth, NJ: Bishop Jerome celebrated the Divine Liturgy in St. George Serbian Church

On Wednesday, January 27, on the Serbian feast of the holy hierarch St. Sava, His Grace Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in St. George Serbian Church in Elizabeth, NJ. Shortly before the greeting of Vladyka, the wonder-working Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God arrived at the church, accompanied by diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov.

 

Richmond, ME: The Kursk Root Icon visited St. Alexander Nevsky Church

On Monday the 25th and Tuesday the 26th of January, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Richmond, ME. On Monday evening, the icon arrived at the church from Holy Trinity Monastery, accompanied by diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov, who, co-served by rector Archpriest Chad Williams and Protodeacon Vasily Milonow, led the All-Night Vigil.

The Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited Holy Trinity Monastery

On Sunday evening, January 24, 2010, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God arrived at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The icon was triumphantly greeted with the peal of bells and by the abbot of the monastery, Archimandrite Luke, the monastery brethren, and seminarians of Holy Trinity Seminary.

On Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th of January, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited the Nativity of the Mother of God Church in the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY. The history of the New Root Hermitage is closely tied to the history of the whole Church Abroad, especially with the wonder-working icon itself, which was kept here during its first years in the United States.

The icon was brought to the monastery by diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov in honor of the installation of the monastery’s new abbot, Abbot Sergius (Bowyer).

On Thursday evening, January 21, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited St. Xenia’s Church in Methuen, MA, where a moleben with akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was served. The church is situated in a remarkable location, not far from a large river in the middle of a wonderful forest.

On Thursday, January 21, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, visited the Church of St. John the Russian located in the cozy New England town of Ispwich, MA. The icon was present at the Divine Liturgy, led by parish rector Archpriest Spyridon Schneider, co-served by Priest Thomas Reske.  

 

Boston, MA: The Kursk Root Icon visited the Church of the Epiphany

On Wednesday evening, January 20, the wonder-working Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited the Church of the Epiphany in Boston, MA, where a moleben with akathist was served before it. The moleben was served by rector Priest Victor Boldewskul, co-served by Hieromonk Roman (Krassovsky), and parish clergy: Priest Thomas Reske, Protodeacon Alexander Jarostchuk, and Deacon Victor Ganson.

On Monday, January 18, the day before the feast of the Theophany, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign, co-served by His Grace Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan, and synodal clergy.  

 

Richmond, ME: The Epiphany in St. Alexander Nevsky Church, and the Blessing of the Kennebec River

On January 19 of this year, on the feast of the Lord’s Epiphany, after the Divine Liturgy in St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Richmond, ME, parishioners participated in a procession through the town to the shore of the Kennebec River, led by rector Archpriest Chad Williams. In the center of the river, a large cross was cut out of the ice, at the foot of which Fr. Chad performed the blessing of the water, plunging a cross into the icy water, while the faithful sang the festal troparion.

On Saturday, January 16, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God was brought by the diocesan secretary to the Holy Dormition Convent at Novo-Diveevo. The icon was greeted by Archpriest Alexander Fedorowski, Abbess Irene, and a multitude of the faithful, who came to venerate the wonder-working icon.

 

Sea Cliff, NY: The Kursk Root Icon visited St. Seraphim of Sarov Church

On Thursday the 14th and Friday the 15th of January, 2010, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited St. Seraphim of Sarov Church in Sea Cliff, NY, for the divine services in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov, the church’s lesser parish feast day. On the eve of the feast the clergy served the Matins, after which a Nativity reception for parishioners was held in the rectory.

Glen Cove, NY: A Dual Joy in the Holy Virgin Protection Church

This week, parishioners of Holy Virgin Protection and St. Sergius Church in Glen Cove, NY, received a dual joy. On Sunday, January 10, His Grace Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan, visited the parish and celebrated the Divine Liturgy. His Grace was co-served by rector Priest Alexandre Antchoutine and Deacon Dimitri Temidis, before a large gathering of the faithful. After the Liturgy, the parish’s Nativity Yolka and a presentation by the parochial school were held in the parish center.

His Grace, Bishop George of Mayfield, led the divine services in Holy Cross Monastery. A very powerful earthquake has devastated Haiti, the poorest country in our hemisphere. The media reports that up to 3,000,000 Haitians have been affected by this calamity. Life in Haiti is very difficult under normal circumstances. Now it is on the brink of becoming unbearable. Officials fear thousands - perhaps more than 100,000 have perished.

 

New York: Fr. Rodion Aragon reposed in the Lord

Fr. Rodion Aragon, the only ROCOR priest in Costa Rica, died of stomach cancer at 9:20 AM today. He was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer in November 2009.  Doctors were unable to operate on him and simply closed the incision. After he awoke, he was in such pain that the doctors put him back to sleep. Fr. Rodion enrolled into the Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville and was planning to continue his education.

The icon was brought to the church by diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov, and was greeted by the parish clergy: Priest Paul Ivanov, Deacon Vladimir Oliynyk, and Deacon Petr Utkin. A great multitude of people gathered in the church, and a moleben with akathist was served.

On Tuesday, December 22, youth of the Eastern American Diocese, as well as others from across the United States and Canada, gathered together in Methuen, MA for the annual Saint Herman’s Youth Conference. The conference was well-attended, with members coming from as far as St. Louis, Florida, and Seattle, totaling over 100 participants.

On Sunday, January 3, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Lakewood, NJ. The icon was greeted by the parish children and young altar servers, who accompanied the Heavenly Queen into the church, reminiscent of the Entry of the Holy Theotokos into the Temple. 

 

Jackson, NJ: The Kursk Root Icon visited St. Vladimir Memorial Church
January 4, 2010
On Saturday, January 2, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God left Jersey City and arrived at St. Vladimir Memorial Church in Jackson, NJ. The icon was greeted by the faithful, then an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was served immediately. After the akathist, the All-Night Vigil was served, led by Archpriest Philip Petrovsky.

On Saturday, January 2, the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God visited Sts. Peter & Paul Church (OCA) in Jersey City, NJ. The parish was founded in 1907 by Priest-Martyr Alexander Hotovitzky, and for some time served as the cathedra of the ever-memorable Archbishop Vitaly (Maximenko). The Liturgy was celebrated by the primate of the Orthodox Church in America, His Beatitude, the Most Blessed Jonah, Archbishop of Washington, Metropolitan of All America and Canada.

On Tuesday, December 29, a meeting was held at the Russian Federation Embassy in Washington, DC, between staffers of the Diocesan Media Office and the embassy’s cultural attaché, Vyacheslav V. Moshkalo. Collaboration between the Media Office and the Embassy on a number of possible projects in the new year was discussed.
