Wayne, WV: Holy Cross Monastery hosts a "Monastic Camp" for a group of boys from Washington

Five boys and three mothers from St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Washington DC, spent the week of August 20th to 26th at Holy Cross Monastery. Besides attending the daily monastic services, the boys aged 7 to 12 took part in monastery obediences including vegetable gardening, incense making, soap making, and the feeding of the monastery's farm animals. A day was spent hiking in the forests surrounding the monastery.

On Saturday, August 27, on the eve of the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, the first anniversary of the repose of one of the senior clerics of the Eastern American Diocese and a longtime cleric of St. Vladimir Memorial Church in Jackson, NJ, Archpriest Boris Kizenko, was prayerfully commemorated at the memorial church.

Now, as the hurricane threatens the East Coast and our Diocese, I call upon all of the faithful of the Eastern American Diocese to unite in prayer for the deliverance of our land from natural disasters.

In keeping with annual tradition, on the feast of the Procession of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, the parish of Our Lady "The Inexhaustible Chalice" held a procession to the ocean for a blessing of the waters, led by parish rector Priest Vadim Arefiev. This year, the participants were met by driving rains, which nonetheless failed to drown out the prayerful enthusiasm and the blessing of the waters.

On Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th of August, on the great feast day of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, His Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Jerome of Manhattan, led the divine services in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York. Upon completion of the Liturgy, His Grace performed the blessing of the grapes and other fruits.

On Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th of August, on the great feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, His Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop George of Mayfield, led the divine services in Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV. In keeping with monastery tradition, every year on the feast of the Transfiguration, the monks perform a procession to a mountaintop on the monastery’s property, which the monastics call "Mount Tabor."

Prior to the beginning of Liturgy, His Grace baptized the newborn Basil Glacken in the lower Church of the Protection of the Mother of God.

On Saturday evening, His Grace prayed at the All-Night Vigil and the bringing-out of the Cross, led by cathedral dean Archpriest John Sorochka, co-served by cathedral Protodeacon Gregory Petrochko.

On Wednesday the 27th and Thursday the 28th of July, on the feast day of the Holy Equal-of-the-Apostles Grand Prince Vladimir, the parish of St. Vladimir Church in Miami, FL marked its patronal feast day. Parish rector Archpriest Daniel McKenzie led the divine services. The St. Vladimir celebrations continued on Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st of July with festal divine services and a procession of the Cross.

It’s a Sunday in August and some two hundred and fifty Orthodox Christians are standing beneath the trees in Pennsylvania, celebrating the Divine Liturgy. One hundred and seventy of the parishioners are children. For many of the people here, this will be the first priest’s ordination that they have attended, or the first time they have met their ruling bishop, the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern American & New York.

Holy Cross Monastery was founded and dedicated to the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, the Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon was chosen as the monastery’s chief intercessor. Every morning, a moleben is served before the relics and icon of St. Panteleimon, for the healing of the sick and suffering. The monastery has often received help from St. Panteleimon, and zealously honors his memory.

On Tuesday the 12th and Wednesday the 13th of July, the parish celebrated the 10th anniversary of the founding of Holy Apostles Church in Beltsville, MD. Divine Services were celebrated on the actual parish feast day, the Synaxis of the Twelve Holy Apostles. The first divine services had been held on the same dates 10 years earlier, July 12-13, 2001. For the first year of the mission, the parish met in the little house in the woods where Fr. George grew up.
