Fontamara: A Conference was held for the Readers of the Orthodox Mission in Haiti

From Monday the 27th to Wednesday the 29th of December, the clergy of ROCOR’s Orthodox Mission in Haiti organized a conference for the Mission’s readers. Participating in this conference were the two priests of the Mission, Priest Jean Chenier-Dumais and Priest Gregoire Legoute, as well as Deacon Jules Dumais and 17 readers from every parish.

On Sunday, February 6, after an almost eight-year hiatus, the Holy Myrrhbearers Diocesan Women's Choir under director Eugenia Temidis, returned in sacred concert to the Synodal Cathedral of the Mother of God of the Sign in New York City. This performance, under artistic direction of Princess Elena N.Wolkonsky was the 92nd in a musical series which benefits the restoration of the historical Synod building (Baker Mansion).

On Saturday, February 26, His Beatitude, Christopher, Archbishop of Prague and Metropolitan of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, visited Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville along with His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Monastery abbot Archimandrite Luke met the guests in the church, to the ringing of bells along with the clergy, brotherhood, seminarians, and parishioners of the monastery.

On Monday, March 21, the funeral of Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos, ruling bishop of the American Carpatho-Russian Diocese, was held in St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Perth Amboy, NJ. The funeral was led by the Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America, Archbishop Demetrios, co-served by bishops of the Greek Archdiocese, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA, the Orthodox Church in America, and representatives of other Local Churches.

Jordanville: Orthodox Men’s Retreat at Holy Trinity Monastery

On Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of March, Orthodox men of all ages visited Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, for the Orthodox Men’s Pilgrimage, organized by members of St. Xenia’s Church in Methuen, MA. The pilgrims were led by parish rector Archpriest Michael Crowley. On Saturday morning, several of the pilgrims assisted as altar servers for the Divine Liturgy. After lunch, the group met with Archimandrite Luke, abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery.

Novo-Diveevo, NY: The Eastern American Diocesan Youth Choir visited Holy Dormition Convent to sing at the divine services

On May 29th, the Sunday of the Blind Man, members of the Eastern American Diocesan Youth Choir travelled to Novo-Diveevo, to the Holy Dormition Convent in Nanuet, NY, in order to sing at the divine services. The choir is comprised of young people from all over the diocese, and has sung at several parishes since its inception just a few years ago. This event marked the choir’s first gathering at Novo-Diveevo.

On Tuesday the 12th and Wednesday the 13th of July, the parish celebrated the 10th anniversary of the founding of Holy Apostles Church in Beltsville, MD. Divine Services were celebrated on the actual parish feast day, the Synaxis of the Twelve Holy Apostles. The first divine services had been held on the same dates 10 years earlier, July 12-13, 2001. For the first year of the mission, the parish met in the little house in the woods where Fr. George grew up.

Holy Cross Monastery was founded and dedicated to the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, the Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon was chosen as the monastery’s chief intercessor. Every morning, a moleben is served before the relics and icon of St. Panteleimon, for the healing of the sick and suffering. The monastery has often received help from St. Panteleimon, and zealously honors his memory.

On Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th of August, on the feast day of St. Tikhon, Wonderworker of Zadonsk (new style), the brethren of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery in South Canaan, PA, marked their patronal feast day. This year, the monastery’s patronal feast day was marked by the historic concelebration of OCA and ROCOR hierarchs. The last time a ROCOR bishop served in the OCA’s principal monastery was in 1943.

South Carolina: 16th annual joint Divine Liturgy at Cheraw State Park

The annual joint Divine Liturgy and picnic of ROCOR parishes in North and South Carolina took place under beautiful skies at Cheraw State Park. This year, the Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by Archpriest Alexander Davydov, Archpriest Anastasy Yatrelis, Archpriest Onouphry Keith, and Priest Alexander Logunov. A joint choir of the four parishes sang the service in Church Slavonic, English, and Greek.

On Sunday, November 6, on the feast of the Icon of Our Lady, "Joy of All who Sorrow," parishioners of the Church of Our Lady, "Joy of All who Sorrow," in Philadelphia, PA celebrated their patronal feast day and the 60th anniversary of the parish’s founding by Russian immigrants in 1951. His Grace, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop George of Mayfield, arrived in Philadelphia and served the Divine Liturgy in that parish for the first time.

Over the course of Christian history, the response to society’s spiritual shortcomings was a retreat from the world and the rise of monasteries. Today, when fewer and fewer people consider Christianity as a whole, or Orthodoxy in particular, to be a religion that obligates them to much, the Eastern American Diocese is witnessing something unexpected – a surge in interest toward monasticism, the expansion of existing monasteries and the appearance of new ones.
